School Counselor

Two days per week, 8:25 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.

The Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, established in 1951, provides quality care and educational services to children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing from infancy to adulthood.  Mill Neck’s specially trained staff, carefully structured programs and access to the newest technologies give students the academic knowledge and confidence they need to be successful both in and out of the classroom.  Our mission is to discover and maximize the child’s potential.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Master’s degree in School Guidance and Counseling
  • Retains current and valid NYS certification as a School Counselor
  • Successful prior experience working in a Deaf/Special education setting—Minimum of 3 years
  • Knowledge of responsive counseling strategies to establish relationships and collaborate with educators, students, families, and community partners which reflect recognition of and respect for each student.
  • Promotes an understanding and appreciation of diverse population and cultures.
  • Excellent communication skills, Fluency in American Sign Language
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team
  • Computer literate

Direct Support Professional

Full-Time Direct Support Professional Day Habilitation Hicksville Program Long Island

Providing training and skill development to a group of Deaf and developmentally disabled adults through community and volunteer experiences.

Responsibilities include:

  • Transporting individuals to and from their residence to volunteer sites using agency vehicle.
  • Support individuals to establish functional independence in specific skill areas, implement individual’s day habilitation service plan goals and objectives and document their progress.
  • Writing brief case notes on a daily and monthly basis regarding the individuals’ progress to insure compliance with the valued outcomes in the Individualized Service Plan (ISP).
  • Leads group sessions with individuals and facilitate the discussions to provide learning skills to be used in the community.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people
  • Ability to develop a rapport with the individuals of various backgrounds
  • Clean and valid New York State Driver’s License

Preferred Requirements:

  • Associates Degree and/or Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least one year experience providing direct care of services to adults with developmental disabilities
  • CRP & First Aid trained, SCIP-R trained

Employment Specialist

Mill Neck Services has opportunities for energetic and enthusiastic Employment Specialist to join a team of dedicated professionals who provide transformative employment services to individuals who are Deaf and/or have additional disabilities. Work with these individuals through all phases of job search through on the job training, empowering them to recognize their abilities and talents and demonstrate these to the community at large.

The ideal candidate is proficient in American Sign Language with BA/BS, has excellent communication skills and wants to make a difference- one job at a time. Job developing / sales experience or business background is a plus. Must possess at least an AA/AS degree, excellent communication skills and be computer literate. Must possess a passion for assisting individuals to achieve personal vocational outcomes and provide person-centered supports.

We offer a flexible work schedule and tremendous opportunities for professional growth, but require the ability and willingness to work weekend and evening/night hours as needed. Must be able to work in NYC metro area at times. For Long Island locations, a valid driver’s license and dependable car is needed. Position Duties:

  • Provide employment services to individuals who are deaf and/or have additional disabilities, through all phases of job search through on the job training and extended services as needed to maintain employment.
  • Assist clients in developing employment plans based on appraisals of aptitudes, interests and personality characteristics and to plan accordingly
  • Contact businesses to determine needs and explain placement services
  • Arrange interviews and facilitate placement
  • Work with clients to master their job duties and responsibilities, understand their compensation, benefits, work schedules, policies and workplace expectations.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with businesses, educational institutions and other sources for future placements.
  • Prepare and maintain contemporaneous written case records, reports, perform case follow-up and other administrative tasks as required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or Related Area preferred. Will Accept AA / AS Degree
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team
  • Computer Literate (knowledge of MS Excel, Word)
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable car ( For Long Island)
  • Ability to work in NYC / Boroughs.
  • MUST be available and willing to work weekends/nights as needed

Part-Time Community Habilitation Workers

Provide one-on-one training to Deaf, developmentally disabled adults. Responsibilities include working on individualized goals with the consumer in his/her community; writing brief case notes describing habilitation contacts and attending trainings as required. All contacts are generally in the evening or on weekends. Some college desirable. Driver’s license and dependable car a must. Fluency in American Sign Language required.
