Deaf Awareness Week 2016 at Mill Neck Manor
Every year, shortly after we all begin to settle into the new school year, the Deaf Education Center (DEC) participates in Deaf Awareness Week. Also known as International Week of the Deaf (IWD), Deaf Awareness Week is celebrated annually by Deaf people around the world during the last full week in September. IWD aims to increase awareness about the achievements, needs and rights of people who are Deaf. This year, our students were visited by Rafael Pinkhasov Pinchas, a Deaf author who wrote, The History of the Deaflympics Games, which highlights the Deaf Winter and Summer Olympics from 1924 through 2014. Later that week, each class debuted the colorful banners they created for the occasion, displaying them as they marched on campus on a bright, beautiful day.
