All Saints Day Devotion

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely.” Hebrews 12:1

Every year people celebrate something called Halloween. Halloween is two words combined, hallows evening. Hallow means holy. This is an old church holy day that celebrates the Holy Ones or rather the saints. The day after Halloween is aptly named All Hallows Day, or All Saints Day. In the Bible verse above, these saints are called the “great cloud of witnesses.” So who is a saint? A saint is a person who has been made Holy by God the Father through Jesus, who died on a cross to forgive all sins, in the Holy Spirit, who is given to us as a gift through the Gospel. On this day we give thanks to God for making us Holy Ones through the sacrifice of His Son. We also thank God for all of the Holy Ones that have died, yet live forever because Jesus Christ lives forever. May the Lord fill you with the joy of salvation and the hope of the resurrection.

Lord, we know you are the only Holy One. We pray that you would have mercy on us because we are not holy. Give us your holiness because of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let your Holy Spirit remain with us and keep us in the faith until the resurrection. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
