Fall Harvest Festival
bounty-of-apples
Every year, Mill Neck Family’s Fall Harvest Festival draws tens of thousands of returning visitors and many more new friends. The Festival annually brings the best of the autumn season to Long Island, making a trip to the beautiful Mill Neck campus over Columbus Day weekend irresistible. This year’s Festival, to be held on October 9 and 10 from 9 am to 5 pm, promises to be better than ever, with the return of ripe apples, handmade country crafts, seasonable produce, grilled bratwurst, children’s activities and much more.

Located on the grounds of a historic Gold Coast estate, between Oyster Bay and Bayville, the Festival, also known as the Apple Fest, has it all. Visitors enjoy a wide variety of apples and opportunities to learn about the Deaf, the Mill Neck Family of Organizations and its services.

In addition, visitors will find a wide variety of cheeses in the “Cheese House,” and plenty of mouth-watering baked goods, jellies, fudge and strudels. The “Country Store” also features a full-line of famous Karl Ehmer wurst and bacon products. The Fall Harvest Festival’s “Gourmet Shop” offers even more fine snacks and sparkling apple cider.

In the children’s activities area, Gooseberry Grove will have a fantastic array of games and activities, and Facepainting by Agostino Arts will also be back this year on Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm and Sunday from 12 to 4 pm. This year, thanks to Barnes & Noble in Manhasset, Author Nick Katsoris will read in the pumpkin patch with his character “Loukoumi,” from his celebrated “Loukoumi’s Good Deeds” and “Loukoumi’s Gift” books, on Saturday from 12 to 3 pm. Maureen Sullivan and Illustrator Alison Josephs will also read their books in the pumpkin patch on Sunday from 12 to 3 pm.

In addition, Mill Neck is pleased to announce a special visit from legendary Sportscaster and Author Len Berman on Saturday from 12 to 3 pm. Sports fans will love chatting with the Emmy winner during this Barnes & Noble-sponsored book signing, where Berman will discuss and autograph his new book, “The Greatest Baseball Players of All Time.” The rain date for Len Berman’s visit is Sunday.
The Festival also showcases the latest in Deaf technology, sign language novelty items and books. Each year, Mill Neck Manor alumni attend the Fall Harvest Festival as a “homecoming,” and the event brings the heart of the Long Island Deaf Community together.

Other activities include a hearing van featuring free hearing screenings from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday, and our successful 50/50 raffle. Be sure to take a chance…tickets are only $10 each, and the winner, picked on Sunday at 3 pm, receives half of all money collected. Last year’s winner won $6,650.00!

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations will host the second annual “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” at the Deaf Education Center from 9 to 11 am on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Open to all 2010 Fall Festival volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will include a continental breakfast, orientation and long-time volunteer recognition. As you enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of fall’s finest on Long Island, we know that you will want to make the Festival a family tradition.

Sponsorships >

At Mill Neck, we work everyday to enhance the quality of life for people who are Deaf, or who have other special communication needs, through excellence in individually designed educational, vocational or spiritual programs and services. Since our first official Festival opened in 1961, the event’s purpose has been to help support these programs and services, while educating the community about Deafness. We have been successful each year, thanks to the support of many individuals, local businesses and church organizations.

If you are interested in sponsoring this wonderful Long Island Tradition, please click here to download a copy of our Fall Harvest Festival Sponsorship Brochure.

Volunteering >

This year’s Fall Harvest Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 9 and 10. What’s quite amazing is that the Festival is run entirely by faithful volunteers. Without the time and talents of volunteer workers, this event would never be possible.

Every booth will be outside and our craft area will be run by outside vendors only. Careful planning has gone into the Festival to ensure continued success, as well as safety, for all our festival goers.

We will be hosting a “Kick-Off” Breakfast for 2010 volunteers to be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 9 to 11am. Click here to view the Fall Harvest Festival “Kick-Off” Breakfast Invitation.

To volunteer, simply complete the Online Fall Harvest Festival Volunteer Form and submit. If you have any questions about volunteering at the Festival, please email cgiordano@millneck.org.

Thanks for your support!
